Composer’s Voice: A Blazing Climax

Composer's Voice Composer's Voice

The closing concert of this riveting Composer’s Voice season fetes the ever-popular guitar. The fifth show devoted to this pleasing instrument features guest curator Dan Cooper showcasing anextensive lineup of pieces, which illustrate the guitar’s diverse potential.

The opening selection, Titania’s Lullaby by Cooper, highlights the engaging arrangement of Thomas Carlo Bo on piano, Justin Valazquez on bass, and Ertunc Jim Oran, David Ricco, and Nathaly Corales playing classical guitars. Lushly mellow, this piece wafts dreamily, invoking a warm, languid sensitivity. Titania’s Lullaby, as if kissed by a fragrant breeze, lulls us into a state of peaceful contentment.

Don’t be fooled by the gentle lucidity of the opening piece though.

Andrew McKenna Lee

The following work, Arabescata, imagined and rendered by Andrew McKenna Lee, confronts the guitar’s inherent intricacy. Lee demonstrates an impassioned rapport with his instrument. Employing a composite of flickering strums and percussive smacks, he ultimately resolves this ardent dissension with tender strokes. Spilling with complexity, Arabescata displays a heated intensity that compels.

Melanie_Chirignan-Alturas_Duo-Scott_Hill-Carlos_Boltes

Composer Masatora Goya premieres Saudade, a movement from his newly commissioned work “Sound of Life.” Masterfully crafted to exact maximum response from the listener, this composition aches with yearning remorse. Alturas Duo (Carlos Boltes on viola and Scott Hill on guitar) and flutist Melanie Chirignan offer a deliberately paced interpretation, which throbs with delicacy and nuance. Accentuating an anchoring rhythm on guitar, the viola and flute twine together brooding melodies that cloak the heart in shadow.

Greg Baker

Astor, fashioned by composer Greg Baker spotlighting himself on guitar and Cooper on 7-string bass guitar, couples an asynchronous clanging with a sexy, snaky melody. Funky with edges that blur, its libidinous rhythms spiral into a thumping jam.

Cristian_Amigo-Angela Babin

Constructed by Dave Soldier and featuring Luis Ianes and Daniel Reyes Llinas on electric guitars, The Revolution of Mr. Jenkins caps the show with a fiery exclamation point. A rumbling introduction quickly segues into growling strata before a screeching outburst interrupts, building to sizzling peak. Brief but burning, it acts as a clamorous assault on the senses.

It is several long months until Composer’s Voice returns, but until then, this multifarious spread of guitar pieces will replay in our heads.

Bill_Anderson-Oren_Fader

Gripping works by Molly Joyce, William Anderson, Alba Potes, Rubens Salles, and Angela Babin & Cristian Amigo round out the 5th Annual Guitar Concert. Musicians Colin Davin, Shaun Barlow, Oren Fader, William Anderson, Rubens Salles, David Acker, Angela Babin, and Cristian Amigo lend their considerable talents.

Fried

Buddy Hollandaise played electric guitar for the Saint Salmon’s Headbanger Orchestra until a wayward electrical surge from an ungrounded amplifier fried both his instrument and more than a few of his brain cells ... not that anyone ever really noticed.

Hard Eight

Dice (commonly known as craps), is a game often played for money where the player (referred to as the shooter) rolls 2 dice hoping to roll a winning combination. The number 8 can be obtained 3 ways. The "easy way" by rolling a 6 and 2 or a 3 and 5, or the "hard way" by rolling a 4 and 4. "Hard" numbers are any 2 pair combinations: 2 and 2, 3 and 3, 4 and 4, 5 and 5, and 6 and 6. Betting on the "hard" number combination results in a larger return when it is thrown.

Rob Voisey will be turning 44 on this Composer's Voice concert in December; and it will be "hard" as the age suggests. *Crap* :)
