This concert features works by Skip La Plante, Dennis Bathory-Kitsz, Robert Voisey, Masatora Goya, Cheryl Krugel-Lee and performances by pianist Yumi Suehiro, violinisit Sabina Torosjan, guitarist Douglas DaSilva, violin & shamisen Duo YUMENO.

Skip La Plante invents, builds, composes for, performs on and teaches with musical instruments built from trash. He co-founded the composer’s collective MUSIC FOR HOMEMADE INSTRUMENTS in 1975. He has had about 200 compositions performed professionally, many for MFHI and most of the rest composed for theater and modern dance companies in NYC. He has created somewhere between 200 and 300 instruments for his own projects, and tens of thousands more in workshops in schools, museums, etc around the US. These instruments run the gamut from simple, such as collections of tin cans used as percussion instruments, to the complex, such as replicas of instruments by microtonal pioneers Harry Partch and Julian Carillo in 43 pitch per octave just intonation and 96 pitch per octave equal temperament respectively. He lived in Indonesia for two years, studying both musical performance and gamelan building, and has performed extensively with Gamelan Kusuma Laras and Gamelan Son of Lion in the US. Working with Bash The Trash over the last 20 years, he’s done about 1500 performances in schools throughout the northeast, as well as many instrument building workshops.

Robert Voisey's graphic score "Frigid Piggy" will be performed by Douglas DaSilva, Mastora Goya, Yumi Suhiro, and Hirona Amamiya. “With few opportunities and much competition,...composers show creativity in just getting heard.” And in Chris Pasles’s article in the Los Angeles Times, Robert Voisey is highlighted as one of those composers. Composing electroacoustic and chamber music, his aesthetic oscillates from the Romantic to the Post Modern Mash-Up. His work has been performed in venues throughout the world including: Carnegie Hall, World Financial Center Winter Garden Atrium, and Stratford Circus in London. Voisey has been profiled and music broadcasted on HEC-TV public television in St Louis, Elektramusik in France, as well as radio stations all around the world including: Cityscape NPR St. Louis Public Radio; Arts & Answers & Art Waves on WKCR, Upbeat with Eva Radich on Radio New Zealand; and Kol Yisrael Israeli Radio.

This concert features the urgently popular Vox Novus program “Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame” which consists of 15 one-minute works by 15 living composers, selected by the performer and performed as a unified whole, teaming up with modern flute legend Robert Dick for a unique presentation called “Fifteen-Minutes-of-Infamy: Robert Dick, modern flute”.

The 15 works selected to be premiered are by composers from around the world: Elizabeth Adams, Syrlane Albuquerque, Rodrigo Baggio, Joseph Bohigian, David Bohn, Robert Dick, Rocco Di Pietro, David Drexler, Masatora Goya. David Evan Jones, Michael Mikulka, Maggi Payne, Daniel Schnee, Samuel Stokes, and David Wolfson.

Congratulations to Steven Aprahamian, whose work "Three Mechanical Movements" was chosen for performance by the Fresno State New Music Ensemble from its call for scores by Armenian composers. Aprahamian's work will be performed by the New Music Ensemble at California State University Fresno in Fresno, California on March 9th and the Brand Library & Art Center in Glendale, California on March 28th. The concerts will feature music by living Armenian composers, including Tigran Mansurian, Eve Beglarian, Joseph Bohigian, Charles Amirkhanian, Artur Avanesov, and Anna Aidinian, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The Fresno State New Music Ensemble is a student-run chamber group dedicated to the performance and promotion of music by living composers. The New Music Ensemble, which is made up of some of the top performers in the Fresno State Music Department, presents at least one concert each semester at CSU Fresno, in addition to other performances around the state. Works are chosen from a wide range of contemporary composers from around the world in various stages of their careers, from student composers to internationally-recognized professionals. Vox Novus is called for one-minute pieces composed for Fifteen-Minutes-of-Fame: CLASSIGARD with Cornelia Petroiu, solo viola to be premiered on February 14, 2015 for Studio Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum, Bucharest, Romania.

CLASSIGARD: From classical to avant-garde music: switching abruptly from one style to another; surprisingly unstable music. Each piece can incorporate different styles or stay within one specific style, thereby leaving the performer to blend the music into the set of 15 in the CLASSIGARD style!

Cornelia Petroiu has been inspiring composers of various tendencies and countries, who wrote for her over 100 works. She is fully dedicated to exploring the sonorities of her viola, and one may hear the concretizing of her musical research by listening to her 10 CDs. She graduated the Music Conservatory in Bucharest and deepened her musical studies at Interlochen-Michigan and Weimar-Germany. Later on, in Paris-CIFAP, she became familiar to Pro Tools software, as a sound editor.

Always passioned by the chamber music, she was the founder of Brio, Pro Musica and FlautArchi quartets, in divers instrumental combinations. Classical music performer at the beginning, she became totally involved in the contemporary music. She is both founder and member of the Trio Alto (viola, saxophone and piano), with over 40 world premieres dedicated to it, up to now. She takes regularly part in international contemporary music festivals: Musica Electronica Nova (Wroclaw), as the soniste of the Meta-Duo, the Internationl Conference and the Spectral Music Festival (Istanbul), Meridian, SIMN, Acousmania (Bucharest), Capitales Sonores (Paris), 2 Days and 2 Nights of New Music (Odessa), etc. Cornelia Petroiu is extending the sphere of the musical expression by recording and post-producing herself most of her instrumental performances.
