William Neal
William Neal

William Neal received his Bachelor’s Degree in Musical Theatre from University of Miami and worked for a number of years as a professional vocalist and actor. After moving to the New York area, William began to record, and perform his own original music under the name *V*I*R*G*O*, as well as composing the score for an innovative multimedia musical comedy called Divas!, which was presented in part at ASCAP’s Musical Theatre Workshop in Miami, directed by Stephen Schwartz.

Throughout his career as a composer and recording artist, William has sought new sounds and innovative ways to create them. His debut album, Moderate Extremism, was released in 2002 and explored the many dysfunctions of life and relationships in today’s urban culture. His forthcoming album, Clarity, is scheduled for release in 2009. Clarity is in many ways a more mature body of work, in terms of both style and subject, focusing on universal themes of self-discovery and embracing one’s place in the world.

After touring with his band in support of Moderate Extremism, William entered NYU’s Music Technology Master’s Degree program. Through his studies with computer music luminaries such as Robert Rowe, Joel Chadabe, Luke DuBois, and Dafna Naphtali, William began to create abstract computer music and sound artworks. In these works, William uses a palette of specialized sampling, synthesis, and signal processing tools he developed using Max/MSP. These often politically charged sound artworks include The Big Fiasco, Shanghai’s Underwater, Civil/Union, and most recently his Despite Protestations series.
