Steffen Wick

Steffen Wick is part of a young generation of composers that play virtuously across genre boundaries. He combines classical melodic lines with elements of film music as well as harmonic patterns that remind the listener of pop music, and molds these into a modern tone language of his own. He extensively studied composition with prof. Caspar Johannes Walter, piano, music theory and new media at the University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. Since 2010 he has been extending his composing skills with prof. Moritz Eggert at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. He gained artistic stimuli through acquaintances with composers such as Steve Reich, Pascal Dusapin, Isabel Mundry and Detlev Glanert.

The focus of Steffen Wick’s repertoire consists of full-length, interdisciplinary concert projects which are developed in collaboration with his artistic partner Simon Detel under the name WIDEMUSIC. He wrote the music for the video concerto »beyond vision«, which was played in 2008 by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Michael Hofstetter with performances at ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, phaeno in Wolfsburg, the Kunstverein Stuttgart and the Museum für Kommunikation in Frankfurt.

In the summer of 2009, his work »Soundtrack Symphony« was spectacularly staged outdoors on a floating platform in Heilbronn which included more than 200 performers, fireworks and a light show. The concertante audio book »Johannes the Dreamer« for speaker, instrumental ensemble and electronics was premiered in 2008 with the European Art Ensemble unter the baton of Bernd Ruf. Steffen Wick is currently composing for the music theatre »Musicophilia« based on the bestseller by New York neurologist Oliver Sacks.
