Pat Hanchet

Pat composes, teaches strings and composition and plays in local ensembles. She writes vocal and instrumental music, for soloists to large groups, for beginners to advanced performers, for almost any instrument or voice to electro-acoustic music. She is published and has had her music played both locally and abroad.

Pat had a musical childhood, which included a large household singing in harmony while doing the chores. Her own sons play piano/keyboards in their own very different ways. After a gap year in Germany, she took a BA Honours degree in Music (where she chose to present a portfolio of substantial original compositions rather than a dissertation) and a Diploma in Education, both from the University of Durham. Compositions Her compositions range from vocal to instrumental to electronic, from traditional to unconventional, from solo to choir with orchestra, from easy pieces for beginners to music for experienced performers. A CD shows a selection of widely varying pieces. See separate lists of works. Teaching Over the years, she has taught music to a variety of people, from pre- schoolers to adults, and from private pupils to school and college classes. Her school pupils were winners and runners up in the regional and national composition competitions promoted by Record Tokens. She now teaches strings and composition at home. Playing Nowadays, Pat plays mainly violin and viola in local orchestras and string quartets as well as for choral societies. She accompanies her own pupils on the piano. Early Music She was once involved in the manufacture of early wind instruments and toured Europe with an early music group playing early winds and strings under the auspices of the European Union. Memberships She is a member of SAM (Sound and Music), CoMA (Contemporary Music for Amateurs), ChaCoCo (a small composers' group which met up in Durham) and the Norwich Philharmonic Society. As a member of the ISM, she was Committee member, Secretary, and Chairman of the Norwich Centre for many years. She is listed within the Performers and Composers section as a composer.
