Noted for his "fluent sense of melody" and "skillful orchestrations" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) Mark D. Petering has received numerous awards from organizations such as ASCAP, SCI, the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. He is the 2003 winner of the Swan Composer Prize for Wind Ensemble for his work The Swimming Pool influenced by the Matisse mural and winner of the 2003 Music Festival of the Hamptons Composition Contest for his orchestral work Train & Tower for orchestra, tape, and live train. The work was premiered July 19, 2003 with Lukas Foss conducting the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra at the Festival Grounds in Bridgehampton, NY. The event was covered by The New York Times, the BBC, and NPR.
Mr. Petering's music has been performed by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra and has been featured four times at the Washington Island Music Festival in Door County, Wisconsin. Mr. Petering has also served as guest composer at the festival. Noted for his compositions influenced by fine art, he will be sited in Dr. Gary Evan's second edition of his book Music Inspired by Art: A Guide to Recordings published by Scarecrow Press. His music is found on the Albany and Zebrina record labels. A graduate of Luther College (B.A.) and Bowling Green State University (M.M.), he is currently a doctoral student in music composition at the University of Minnesota where he studies with Judith Lang Zaimont and Alex Lubet. His former teachers include Samuel Adler, Burton Beerman, Wallace DePue, John Downey, Marilyn Shrude and Ron Foster.
Dr. Hijleh has received composition awards from NATS (2002 Vocal Composition Award Winner), Kappa Gamma Psi, T.U.B.A., Loyola College of Maryland, and ASCAP. His works have been performed professionally by the Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestras, the Janus Orchestra, the Liberty Symphony Orchestra, the Bach Ensemble of Baltimore, at Washington's Kennedy Center, ResMusicAmerica in Baltimore, and Oxford University, UK, and by major ensembles of the Peabody Conservatory, Ithaca College, Houghton College, and William Jewell College.
Mark Hijleh lives with his wife, soprano Kelley Ruth Hijleh, and daughter Hannah in Houghton, New York, where he serves as Professor of Composition and Conducting at the Houghton College School of Music and conducts the Houghton Philharmonia Orchestra. He is also founder and President of the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers (www.cfamc.org).
